When you ask: How many ounces in a cup?

Here is a small series of posts that cover the most asked ques­tions on Google. Most of these ques­tions won’t be ans­we­red here. Howe­ver, I might, for fun, give an ans­wer if I per­so­nal­ly know it. It’s most­ly to have fun with why people ask so many questions.

It’s unbe­lie­vable that this ques­tion is here, but let me explain its pre­sence. Des­pite there being an inter­na­tio­nal sys­tem of volume mea­su­re­ment, there are seve­ral sys­tems and varia­tions. The deci­mal sys­tem that we know, which is cal­led the inter­na­tio­nal sys­tem, is of course the sim­plest to mas­ter. In expo­nents or radi­cals of 10, it is avai­lable with seve­ral labels which allow you to switch from one to the other without too much dif­fi­cul­ty. The impe­rial or Ame­ri­can sys­tem is bro­ken down into various units of mea­su­re­ment, each more poe­tic than the last, but even for a machine, it is a consi­de­rable chal­lenge to unders­tand and convert, etc. For example, you will know from memo­ry how to cal­cu­late the num­ber of inches in a mile, but let’s face it, we can ins­tant­ly tell the num­ber of cen­ti­me­ters in a kilo­me­ter. And we could des­cribe all other sys­tems such as those in India or Chi­na, for example.

The rea­son why the units of the inter­na­tio­nal sys­tem have a hard time in eve­ry­day life is their dis­tance from the simple ele­ments of life. Food pre­pa­ra­tion is based on one sys­tem or ano­ther, hou­sing construc­tion is also clo­se­ly rela­ted to them and so on.

All this social inte­gra­tion, almost as intense as a lan­guage, makes stan­dar­di­zing a sys­tem an almost emo­tio­nal chal­lenge, making oppo­nents not consi­der the other point of view, which can­not in the short term make both par­ties win.
