When you ask: How many ounces in a cup?
Here is a small series of posts that cover the most asked questions on Google. Most of these questions won’t be answered here. However, I might, for fun, give an answer if I personally know it. It’s mostly to have fun with why people ask so many questions.
It’s unbelievable that this question is here, but let me explain its presence. Despite there being an international system of volume measurement, there are several systems and variations. The decimal system that we know, which is called the international system, is of course the simplest to master. In exponents or radicals of 10, it is available with several labels which allow you to switch from one to the other without too much difficulty. The imperial or American system is broken down into various units of measurement, each more poetic than the last, but even for a machine, it is a considerable challenge to understand and convert, etc. For example, you will know from memory how to calculate the number of inches in a mile, but let’s face it, we can instantly tell the number of centimeters in a kilometer. And we could describe all other systems such as those in India or China, for example.
The reason why the units of the international system have a hard time in everyday life is their distance from the simple elements of life. Food preparation is based on one system or another, housing construction is also closely related to them and so on.
All this social integration, almost as intense as a language, makes standardizing a system an almost emotional challenge, making opponents not consider the other point of view, which cannot in the short term make both parties win.
