When we go through changes.
Listened while writing this post, try while reading it :o)
This post is the twelfth in a series reflecting on the meaning of life and the importance of this question. These posts should be read in the order they are published as, starting at the 6th for example, dear reader, will mean the whole thing makes no sense. Happy reading!
Eating and feeling- our very first activities which continue during the first years of our lives, way before we are even able to properly communicate. Sounds, images, the association between the two, emotions that make us feel those of others, the presence or absence of our natural protectors, the food we are given, the health tests we are subjected to, and all the impressions that we are left with; these physical experiences mirror somewhat the following steps of our intellectual development.
In fact, all this happens progressively through endless emotional learning- and precious little cold, hard rationalisation. This is the paradox of the transition from the teenage years to adulthood. Upon leaving this emotional phase which, it has to be said, culminates in such an amazing way, we experience a moment in which life seems to make no sense at all. Why? Because we are totally overwhelmed! Our rational brains speed up and begin to compete with our emotional brains- those which have accompanied us so well for all these years; those which have led us through so many life experiences. All of a sudden there’s a new kid on the block and they seem to have absolutely no consideration at all for this loyal, old companion of ours. This is where we come to the so-called crisis, this loss of meaning if you like, or rather the absence of meaning. This new arrival poses just one question. Can you guess what?
To be continued…
