When we question ourselves.
Listened while writing this post, try while reading it :o)
This post is the fifthteenth in a series which looks at the evolution of what is left of what we call democracy in my nation. These posts are best read in the order they were published. Starting at the 6th post in the series, for example, will mean that nothing makes sense to you, dear reader. Happy reading!
So, at what point do we become ‘weak of spirit’? As with all things, there are those for whom the condition may be permanent, but for the most part, the majority of us just experience episodes of weakness from time to time. To my mind, the people we idolise tend to be those who manage never to show this weakness outwardly. Indeed when a celebrity makes a mistake or shows the slightest imperfection, we get a full blown scandal!
If we separate the exceptional people from all others, in other words, those who truly are models of virtue, intelligence and knowledge, from those who are more or less ordinary; we will see that the category containing the ‘everyday’ people is pretty large. Looking across the entire wider group – the whole population – we can find those closest to perfection right alongside those closest to facing perceptual difficulties.
This brings us, tenuously, to our main subject. What will happen when the problems of the world begin to require such complex solutions that only a small proportion of the population is able to understand what needs to be done? And what can be done to continue to evolve whilst conserving the principle of democracy? Well it’s very simple: if we cannot change the people, we must change the system to suit them. Welcome to demonarchy!
See you next time…
