When we ques­tion ourselves.

This post is the fif­th­teenth in a series which looks at the evo­lu­tion of what is left of what we call demo­cra­cy in my nation. These posts are best read in the order they were publi­shed. Star­ting at the 6th post in the series, for example, will mean that nothing makes sense to you, dear rea­der. Hap­py reading!

So, at what point do we become ‘weak of spi­rit’? As with all things, there are those for whom the condi­tion may be per­ma­nent, but for the most part, the majo­ri­ty of us just expe­rience epi­sodes of weak­ness from time to time. To my mind, the people we ido­lise tend to be those who manage never to show this weak­ness out­ward­ly. Indeed when a cele­bri­ty makes a mis­take or shows the sligh­test imper­fec­tion, we get a full blown scandal! 

If we sepa­rate the excep­tio­nal people from all others, in other words, those who tru­ly are models of vir­tue, intel­li­gence and know­ledge, from those who are more or less ordi­na­ry; we will see that the cate­go­ry contai­ning the ‘eve­ry­day’ people is pret­ty large. Loo­king across the entire wider group – the whole popu­la­tion –  we can find those clo­sest to per­fec­tion right along­side those clo­sest to facing per­cep­tual difficulties.

This brings us, tenuous­ly, to our main sub­ject. What will hap­pen when the pro­blems of the world begin to require such com­plex solu­tions that only a small pro­por­tion of the popu­la­tion is able to unders­tand what needs to be done? And what can be done to conti­nue to evolve whil­st conser­ving the prin­ciple of demo­cra­cy? Well it’s very simple: if we can­not change the people, we must change the sys­tem to suit them. Wel­come to demonarchy!
