When you’re about to wrap everything up
Another year is coming to an end. Let’s think about that. I think about what a year can represent. In recent years, time seems to have gone by quicker. Some studies, I’ll let you Google them if you’re interested, touch on several aspects, but some are still worth mentioning.
The complexity of the brain. That seems pretty interesting to me. Although it requires cross-comparisons, in other words, testing people with real brain complexities versus other “simple” people, both of a similar age and health condition. Complexity would make us absorb information more slowly. A bit like how a wine connoisseur would savour every molecule of liquid compared to someone else who wouldn’t be able to distinguish wine from grape juice.
Another point would be age, of course. The older we get, the slower our brain would be in processing “reality”, which would make time pass faster because we “lose part of the way”.
And last but not least, and pay attention, it is all in the fine details, something that I would call wonder vs weariness. Our brain would process experiences and images that we see more intensely when we experience them the first time. This would be why if you were to take a trip to the same place twice, the first time would seem “longer” than the second.
