When we go round in circles.
Listened while writing this post, try while reading it :o)
This post is the third in a series reflecting on the meaning of life and the importance of this question. These posts are best read in the order they were published. Starting at the 6th post in the series, for example, will mean that nothing makes sense to you, dear reader. Happy reading!
The limits of our understanding of life are closely tied to our empirical understanding of the universe. In the previous post I spoke about the law of action and reaction. This principle is far from harmless. The trigger element for our curiosity to search for something springs from the latter. If an action is produced, whether it impacts us or not, we feel called to look for the reason behind it so that we can define the opposite as a reaction. Today we have come to understand a number of cycles which surround us. We believe that we know the universe is cyclical- something happens which then generates another event, then another and another, until eventually we arrive back where we began.
The majority of our current knowledge tends towards cyclical concepts. These continue endlessly and have been, are and will continue to be so, forever. This concept however is incompatible with our brains. The fact that we react to the principle of a primordial trigger is completely at odds with our intense satisfaction with the idea of an ensemble of interconnected cycles which harmonise perfectly. All rivers have a beginning and an end, right? Otherwise it wouldn’t make any sense.
Until next time…
