When we simply live.
Listened while writing this post, try while reading it :o)
This post is the twenty second in a series reflecting on the meaning of life and the importance of this question. These posts should be read in the order they are published as, starting at the 6th for example, dear reader, will mean the whole thing makes no sense. Happy reading!
So, I’ll ask again: are we robots? Another way of looking at it would be from a biological standpoint. We can’t realistically have any other aim in life than the one which unites us all – to simply live! The instinct to survive, this concept which inhibits us from allowing death to take over, is well and truly the only area where our legendary laziness does not dominate us. It reminds us too that life, as many others along with Darwin have told us, is not won without a fight!
So, I would say that biologically speaking, and we cannot deny the existence of biology, we are, to a certain extent, biological machines. But if this truth just defines us as a bunch of digestive organs blessed with a capacity for reasoning, then that reasoning is the only thing which distinguishes us at all. And this brings us right back to where we started out – the fact that we can not simply be a bunch of digestive organs, Why? Well, let’s take a break here and leave that for the next post.
To be continued…
