When we are the hero.
Listened while writing this post, try while reading it :o)
This post is the twenty first in a series reflecting on the meaning of life and the importance of this question. These posts should be read in the order they are published as, starting at the 6th for example, dear reader, will mean the whole thing makes no sense. Happy reading!
Are we robots? The answer to this question could influence the answer to our question of the very meaning of life! Does a robot have a raison d’etre? Well, yes. However this reason is purely practical. This ‘being’ has been created with a precise function in mind without which it would not exist. Isn’t it the same with us?
Some, whether spiritual or not, will agree that our existence is purely functional too. That a higher power creates us for a specific reason, for a mission, to achieve a goal. For many people this is actually really reassuring- not everyone is instinctively capable of finding their own aim in life. Very few people are able to go through life carrying the burden of being the master of their own destiny.
This being said, we all have the capacity to do so. The proof is that our widespread acceptance of doctrine is a choice in itself, and choice is the first step to freedom. If we are able to make choices, then we are able to choose different paths, time, after time, after time. Think of those books where ‘you are the hero.’ The risk of making a mistake, but more so of carrying the responsibility for it, was difficult to accept, but once we had made that leap we were truly free.
Until next time…
