When we have free will.
Listened while writing this post, try while reading it :o)
This post is the twentieth in a series reflecting on the meaning of life and the importance of this question. These posts should be read in the order they are published as, starting at the 6th for example, dear reader, will mean the whole thing makes no sense. Happy reading!
I began the last post by asking if you believed you were the author of your own life. Since birth very few of us have lived proactively. Most of us have simply been reacting to the events which have occured around us. These reactions are, however, something I believe we have control over. Try to remember an intense situation you experienced as a child. Your reaction then was pure, unplanned, and probably generated such a strong emotion that you can no doubt recall it just as clearly at this very moment as you experienced it at the time. Later on in life the memory, whether bitter or sweet, of these purely emotional reactions begins to influence your reactions to successive similar situations you come across. And so we begin to think consciously about these reactions- they become less and less natural.
This skill for recreating our reactions, whether consciously or subconsciously has, for certain people, actually given way to an opportunity to control the subconscious. However, this remains a matter of debate for, even though science shows us sturdy proof, very few are ready to accept the reality of manipulation. ‘Freedom!’ They cry.
Until next time…
