When it’s a small world.
Listened while writing this post, try while reading it :o)
This post is the sixteenth in a series reflecting on the meaning of life and the importance of this question. These posts should be read in the order they are published as, starting at the 6th for example, dear reader, will mean the whole thing makes no sense. Happy reading!
This is then a distinguishing factor of those who search for meaning in their lives, or indeed life in general, and those who are interested in social sciences. To my mind, a person who is interested only in natural science would never have this problem. There is always an exception, however, and in this case it is maths! Even maths possesses properties which seem mystical, and we often come up blank when we attempt to attribute meaning to them. Here’s a real-life example:
Say you go hiking with a friend and you choose your destination at the point of starting out- nothing has been pre-planned. You set off when you please and arrive within a reasonable amount of time, taking into account that you stopped here and there along the way. You proceed with your walk and choose any tools needed according to the state of the paths you come across. Along the way you meet just one sole person, and this person turns out to be a mutual friend of the two of you. Incredible!
Attempting to give meaning to a coincidence like this would be dangerous, but all the same, there is a science which can explain it.
Until next time…
