When you ask yourself: How to cook quinoa?

Here is a little series of posts which cover the most Googled questions on the internet. Most of these questions I will not be able to answer here, although I can offer a response if I happen to have one. The main idea of this series is to have a bit of fun discussing why people ask these questions so often.

Ah lovely, a culinary question! I’ve been hoping for one for a while now. So, quinoa. Actually, this question makes me think of how we know if any given plant is edible or not in the first place. Bit daft really, isn’t it? I think firstly, we have to show some serious respect to those who have gone before us and risked their health, and lives even, in order to find out! There must have been a fair few who suffered pain or illness during the discovery process when they came across plants which were toxic in one way or another to humans.

That is to say, and this is totally hypothetical, that should we ever lose this knowledge, it would not be without huge sacrifice that we would be able to relearn which plants were edible and which were not. I’m not referring to the sacrifice of human lives here, but rather of intellectual time to invest in other subjects. If we found ourselves back in a period where word of mouth was the main method of transferring information, take a parent teaching their child how to sustain themselves for example, the time and effort invested here, especially when it came to recall skills, could be detrimental to other essential learning. In my view it is important  that we hold onto this knowledge dearly and keep it somewhere safe which is accessible by all.
