When we recap.
Listened while writing this post, try while reading it :o)
This post is the tenth in a series which looks at the evolution of what is left of what we call democracy in my nation. These posts are best read in the order they were published. Starting at the 6th post in the series, for example, will mean that nothing makes sense to you, dear reader. Happy reading!
Complex isn’t it? Allow me to take a few moments to run through our journey so far. We began by exploring the concept of a figurehead. A concept which underlies our habit of delegating the overly difficult or complex tasks, including the management of decision-making powers in our current political model. This tendency is reinforced by our love of ease. It may seem obvious but there is a paradox here with the difficulty we have, in our daily lives, of trusting others with current affairs – a paradox topped off by our blind faith in our own abilities. This mistrust of others, often expressed as a moral quandary, is in fact an effect of deep reflection- if others are looking for ease and simplicity in the same way that we are, then we often choose to pass over the whole sorry business to them – just as in elections.
These elections brought us to the concept of a figurehead. If we would not trust our neighbour two doors down with our destiny then why would we entrust it to another complete stranger – a figurehead – in whom we have invested this power? Let’s unpack this.
Until next time…
