When you do the right thing.
This is the fourteenth in a series of posts reflecting on the general decline of civility. These posts should be read in order of publication. Starting with number six, for example, would make no sense to the reader. Happy reading!
And there you go. We’ve set the stage for our next examples. A word about the highway code and motor vehicles. You could say that this was the first social network. Everyone is in their own vehicle and everyone enjoys a certain amount of anonymity. First of all, who will go to the lengths of tracking down a thug on the road? Sure, some people “chase” each other, but most of the time, the belligerents give up. Knowing this, who will fear being tracked down? Do you see a cycle setting in? Do we secure ourselves on the basis of our own ability to track someone down and therefore to be tracked down?
Considering this limit, we can see it as a border. This border slides and takes away or gives space to the civilized area. Obviously, a society where the civil code, in the sense of civility, is very present does not mean that mishaps are not possible. There may even be more of them. The more rules there are, the more interpretation there is, the more possible it is to be caught out. This price to pay comes at the benefit of refining our behavior and controlling our instincts, because yes, that is what we mean when we talk about civility, controlling our primary instincts.
To be continued…
