When one evil reveals another.

I’d encou­rage you to read yesterday’s post before this one.

I don’t believe that this is the case for all nations, but if you were to draw all the nations that are sli­ding towards a tota­li­ta­rian demo­cra­cy on a straight line, I believe mine would be one of them. When emo­tion takes over from logic, our lea­ders start to behave in ways that are dif­fi­cult, if not impos­sible, to unders­tand. Impos­sible, because just like in any emo­tio­nal spi­ral, it is very dif­fi­cult for anyone to know all the levers that moti­vate cer­tain beha­vior. In the case of elec­ted offi­cials, it is deci­sions, not beha­vior, that are in ques­tion. The fact that these humans hold impor­tant posi­tions means that they pos­sess power that is far super­ior to the popu­la­tion they govern.

Here, we have a mix­ture of per­so­na­li­ty, pro­gres­sive trig­ge­ring events, events among which his­to­ry will be able to iden­ti­fy a tip­ping point, and a job role. This mix­ture can hap­pen anyw­here, whe­ther it be in a coun­try, a com­pa­ny, a volun­teer group or at the cen­ter of a fami­ly. The one we are inter­es­ted in today is the natio­nal context. How can we slow­ly slide towards evil when those who push us there do so in the name of good? Can we still talk about freedom?
