When you shouldn’t be afraid.
I listened to this while writing this post, try it while you read :o)
This is the twenty-eighth in a series of posts reflecting on our willingness to remember and the quality of that knowledge. These posts should be read in order of publication. Starting with number six, for example, would make no sense to the reader. Happy reading!
So, how do you do it? How do we ensure that the relevant literature outlives us? Libraries are interesting, but their mission is not aligned with my project. A library has an educational mission and a cultural mission first and foremost. However, this mission is not natural in people’s minds. For many, a library is a place where you can find written content that you want, but not necessarily need. This aligns perfectly with the mission of the library. Giving people what they want. It is therefore a leisure service before it is a knowledge service. So who’s in charge of knowledge? The Internet has obviously downgraded libraries in terms of leisure, because libraries are not enough. When it comes to knowledge, it is easy to understand why so many people read on the Internet, libraries have failed in their lack of vision.
The concept of a library must therefore be reinvented. Library, from the Latin bibliotheca (“room or piece of furniture containing books”), itself borrowed from the ancient Greek βιβλιοθήκη, bibliothếkê (“place of deposit of books”). There are a multitude of books in the world, but if we were to label our library as “knowledge”, would this not be an indication that the primary mission of this institution would be to focus primarily on the object of knowledge, rather than on the words chosen to describe that knowledge?
To be continued…
