When the world gets confused.
I listened to this while writing this post, try it while you read :o)
This post is the second in a series of posts about a reflection on our ability to socially evolve. These posts should be read in the order of their publication. For example, starting with the 6th would make no sense to the reader. Happy reading!
I will therefore begin this long literary address with a subject that is close to my heart and always will be; education. But first of all, I’m going to try and “freestyle” a definition of education.
The roots of the word “education” are somewhat lost in time, as with many words. What is interesting in the science of words, etymology, is to draw up a tree of meanings and to see the branches that a particular word has taken on over time. Sometimes, but rarely, a word has rigorously retained its mental meaning of reality, but often, the words have been “tortured” in order to borrow their meaning for other purposes. They were divided, stretched in all directions, and new meanings that were not quite the same as the original ones emerged from these manipulations.
Thus, for the word “education,” we don’t have to go too far back into the etymological tree and we will stay close to our notion of it. “Education” means “to construct” or better, “ to instruct”. By chopping up the word “instruction”, we can find the suffix “-tion”, which is the action of doing something. There is the prefix “in-“, which refers to the interiority of the object in question. Finally, we find “struc”, which recalls the word “structure”, which refers to an organized assembly according to a certain logic.
To be continued.
