When the search for happiness moves the control centre
I listened to this while writing this post, try it while you read :o)
What a title! Let’s see what it means. The locus of control is, in jargon terms, the place where you can find the controls that control your…life. When you put it that way, it’s a little intense, but let me explain my understanding of the concept.
If you want to achieve your concept of happiness, you inevitably have to face up to two views of the world. The first implies that everything that happens to you is the consequence of external acts. We can include the factor of “luck” in this. Even if a four-leaf clover can bring you good fortune, from a scientific point of view, it is impossible to causally prove it. Unfortunately, this external control centre offers little means to the main interested party.
Regarding the internal control centre, it represents another view of the world that corresponds to the power we have over creating our own happiness. At first, we will naturally seek to create external events that will make us happy – wealth, for example – but we will eventually evolve towards a softer, abstract and indirect appreciation of happiness, which at the same time will represent a quantity of microscopic energy compared to what we have provided in the past.
