When you need a little reassurance
What a great opportunity to look at our origins. Let’s see. Careful, I let my thoughts drift off course on a simple deduction that seems logical to me, nothing scientific here, so do your own research. :o)
It seems to me that body contact is from at least two sources. The first is thermal in nature. Who has ever wished to steal a little warmth from a companion, either deliberately or by chance? Whether this companion is a human or an animal, calories are calories!
The second source of motivation for such behaviour would be a sense of security. It could be that of an offspring or of a person who may or may not be conscious of their vulnerability to a companion, providing them with a feeling of future protection, thus of tranquillity of the present moment. It could also be in the role of the protector, who likes knowing that their dependant is safe in the present and very short term.
I think the hug is just that. A personal and shareable form of a mutual feeling of comfort, well-being and peace of mind. A few seconds of stolen time for a peaceful moment in this hyper-stimulating world.
