When help arrives
Today, we welcome a new person to our team. Welcome, Abbie! Abbie is a translator I found through a platform called Upwork. Do you remember I was telling you about dividing your activities into tasks and identifying patterns? Well, that’s what I did, and my first action was identifying, as many have done before me, the content from the container. Translation just about fits into these two areas. Abbie must take my text in French and translate it into English. This work requires a subtlety of language that goes beyond simply managing the raw text.
When it comes to dividing tasks, we firstly aim to balance specialisation and general knowledge of the process itself. For me, outsourcing must yield a profit. We can understand value in different ways. What I chose is the following; in the same amount of time, increasing the overall quality of the product, or at least maintaining the quality, whilst reducing the production time. In Abbie’s case, it is the former that applies.
So, welcome, Abbie. I’ll leave you with the final word.
Hey everyone! So, as you know, my name is Abbie. I am from Ireland, but I currently live in Scotland, working as a translator and a subtitler. As Danny said, we came across each other on Upwork, and I’m so excited to become a part of this family and to provide (hopefully) some good English versions of Danny’s work! Languages, for me at least, are the most fascinating thing in the world. There is a Czech proverb that says, “You live a new life for every language you speak.” For me, this is so true. When looking at things in different languages, you gain a new perspective, and to learn other cultures and ways of life is so enriching. I hope Danny and I can inspire you not only to reflect on the topics he touches on, but maybe also to learn a little bit of English every day, you never know where it might lead you!
