Some words about transformation
Digital transformation is something that needs to happen everywhere as the world is changing. Let’s think about this. One of my favourite way to explain to someone or to a group how digital transformation needs to happen is by the following approach. Bring the people to a room where they can individually stand in front of a mirror. Make sure they can’t see and bring them in front of the mirror. While they have their eyes closed, tell them a story. Ask them to look for the one or the group that need to change in their organization, the one that is the main actor of the transformation. Then ask them to open their eyes, so the only thing they can see is their own reflection in the mirror. It is important that they only see themselves, individually, so they won’t interpret that as a group thinking, but a personal introspection.
Another way to present it, depending on what’s going on in this very organization, is to present this activity as a way to identify the most dangerous actor to a transformation. They must understand that every change can be blocked if they don’t believe in it. If they don’t trust themselves, how can they expect to trust others?
So next time you hear about these transformation programs at your business place, think about this. How will you change the way you work and behave at work to make sure that your organization will evolve and that your contribution will make it happen. Start thinking about yourself before you think about other people. Start thinking about what scares you before thinking about what could scare other people.
That’s how you will be able to make it happen. Otherwise, you will encourage this witch hunt or this fear campaign that happens so often in every organization looking to transform itself.
