When memories are troubled
Today is the Memorial Day. I will start with the Wikipedia definition of this day as an introduction. Let’s jump into this. It goes like this “[…] for remembering and honouring the military personnel who perished while serving in the United States Armed Forces.” One could ask: why? The context around this topic seems quite complex to me. I already talked about this, so I will summarize it like this: War is essential but unwanted. Essential as it represents the last and worst resort to solve a conflict where one group represent a threat to another group, but unwanted as the consequences on life are the worst.
Unfortunately, the triggers of war declaration are not as objectives as we would wish for. What is a threat? Is it a direct threat with words? Official or not? Even the project to disarm the whole planet is not enough to maintain peace. It would be impossible to get a global trust. Even being unarmed, inequalities, natural or not, would eventually lead to physical aggression. Would we accept to return to cave men stage and let the stronger ones decide?
Humans are imperfect, and because of this reality, when we look in the mirror, we see our flaws and the need for war is one of them. So let’s honour those who gave their life to do dirty jobs.
